Dental Insurance Plans
It is a common misconception that health insurance plans provide coverage for oral health care. This is simply not true, as the two are wholly unique from one another. Certain health insurance providers also offer dental insurance policies, and therefore offer packages to consumers seeking both. (Possibly at a discounted combination rate)

Dental insurance is similar to health insurance in that it is generally viewed as a form of preventive care. The purpose of preventive dental care is to continually monitor and maintain oral health. By maintaining good oral health, you can potentially thwart any costly problems that could result from poor oral health or lack of professional attention. If you wait until a problem is so severe that you have no option but to seek professional dental help, it might already be too late.

Dental insurance plans tend to provide coverage for the following:

  • Routine Care (Check-ups)
  • Wisdom Teeth Removal
  • Root Canals
  • Dentures / Dental Implants
  • Cavities
  • Crowns
  • X-Rays
  • Gum Disease / Gingivitis

As with health insurance, there are 4 major categories of dental insurance. These include:

  • Discount Dental Plans
  • Indemnity Plans
  • Preferred Provider Organizations
  • Dental HMOs

Discount Dental Plans - Cheapest form of dental coverage. Not actually considered to be a form of insurance. This provides coverage for the basic services such as routine check ups and cleanings. The monthly cost of a discount dental plan could be as little as $6 per month.

Indemnity Plans - Indemnity dental plans allow policyholders to visit the licensed dentist of their choosing without being tied down by any sort of network. This type of dental insurance plan provides the most flexibility of the four, and is therefore the most expensive. Average monthly costs are approximately $25.

Preferred Provider Organizations - Dental PPO plans are somewhat like a combination of HMO and Indemnity insurance. There is a network of dentists that it is recommended you stay within, however, you can choose to visit the licensed dentist of your choice. If you do stay within the network, you can save a great deal of money. Average monthly costs are in the range of $15 - $20 per month.

Dental HMOs - Dental HMOs are very much like healthcare HMOs. Policyholders are required to pay a monthly premium and a co-payment for office visits, whilst remaining within the boundaries set by a somewhat limited network of dentists. Monthly costs for dental HMO insurance average approximately $10 - $15.
