Dental Insurance Companies
It is a common misconception that dental care is covered by health insurance policies. Whilst it is true that there are some health insurance policies through which you can pay for the inclusion of dental care coverage, for the most part, dental insurance and health insurance are two wholly separate entities.
The insurance industry is such that the biggest insurance providers tend to offer insurance policies for a wide variety of industries, ranging from health, dental and life insurance, to mortgage, auto and travel insurance. As a result, although dental care is not generally covered as a part of health insurance, you can usually get dental care insurance from the same provider with whom you have health insurance. This can not only be convenient in terms of having your insurance policies through the same provider, but in some cases, packaging numerous types of insurance policies could save money.
Two of the larger, well known dental care insurance companies are as follows:
Aetna - Aetna is one of the most reputable companies when it comes to providing quality insurance products and affordable rates. Available throughout all 50 states, Aetna offers a wide variety of dental insurance products for individuals, families and employers alike. Aetna dental insurance plans include the following:
- Aetna Advantage Dental™: This is a basic dental plan that provides coverage for a range of routine, preventative services such as checkups and cleanings, along with other basic dental 'restorative' services. Policyholders' costs can be limited to office visit copayments.
- Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO®): If you are looking for a great balance between low cost dental insurance and wide array of covered services, then Aetna's DMO® plan could be what you're looking for. Policyholders are required to select a Primary Care Dentist who will be responsible for coordinating their dental care.
- Dental PPO: If you are looking for the greatest degree of flexibility, then consideration of the Dental PPO plan is a must. Although there is a network of dentists, you are not required to select a Primary Care Dentist (Although savings may be realized by remaining within the network) and are free to select the licensed dentist of your choosing. With the dental PPO, you are simply responsible for your deductible and coinsurance up to your agreed upon annual maximum.
United Healthcare - Available throughout all 50 states and 4 international markets, United Healthcare is one of the most successful insurance companies in the business. With more than 18 million individual customers, United Healthcare offers a wide variety of insurance services ranging from health and dental to vision and life. United Healthcare dental insurance plans include the following:
- Options PPO: Very much along the lines of your standard dental PPO plan, United Healthcare's Options PPO allows policyholders to access their network of highly reputable dentists at incredibly affordable rates. Whilst you will save a little bit of money by staying within the PPO network of dentists, you are in no way required to do so, being afforded the freedom to visit the licensed dentist of your choosing.
- Managed Indemnity: This fee-for-service dental insurance plan has no network through which you must remain affiliated. You have the freedom of choice to visit the licensed dentist of your choosing. After each visit, either you or your dentist will submit a claim to United Healthcare, and they will reimburse your costs as quickly as possible.
